remembrance for my only cousin

Created by László 3 years ago

After the untimely death of his mother, Patrick became part of our family from the age of 5 until the age of 7. Even his middle name had been chosen after my father, Attila Berenyi. We had no other siblings, thus we considered each other as brothers. We went to school together, Patrick finished the first grade of elementary school in Budapest. (Pict. 1)

Our forced separation caused a trauma not only in him but also left a deep imprint on me.
Our correspondence - after moving to London - began 65 years ago. He showed off his drawing skills inherited from his mother on his first self-made Christmas greeting card. (Picture 2 London bus). The particularly beautiful or humorous greeting cards he sent to the family were cherished and kept as treasures. Sometimes he even drew them himself. (Pict. 3)
Thanks to his English teacher’s father, he learned literary English very well. He then left the commercial school to pursue acting as his grandmother was actress. (Picture 4) Luckily, he got into a good company at the “Old Vic” Theatre in Bristol. I was lucky enough to enjoy one of their guest performances at the Apollo Theatre in London. (Pict 5,6)
The highlight of his visits to Hungary was the tasting of his favourite Hungarian dishes. (fish soup, stew, 'lángos', 'poppy strudel') and sightseeing in his beloved Budapest and beyond (Pict. 7) His cheerfulness and frenetic improvisations remain in the memory of all his Hungarian friends.
I have lost my beloved cousin, my brother... but in my thoughts he remains close to me as ever.
